Eco-Living

How do we practice authentic eco-living?

Environmental experts say that it will take humanity 100 years to heal the damage we’ve done to the earth. What can we all do to become more eco-friendly? What does it mean to practice eco-living?

The key to being eco-friendly is for everyone to live more as a whole, to inflict minimal or no harm on the environment. As we become more conscious as a society, we realize it’s time to restore damaged ecosystems, forests, soils, waters, and the air. Earth restoration is the first step towards creating a healthier planet.

By implementing local and organic farming, green building, and renewable resource usage, we become more sustainable. Examples of eco-living are: local and organic farming, composting, building green, reducing consumption, reusing or completely stop using non-renewable materials, recycling, and promoting the use of renewable resources and renewable energy.

Before You Buy a Garden Planter, Container or Pot

There are so many lovely plant containers and pots available for use in our gardens, on decks and porches, and indoors. How do you choose the best one? Too often we are guided by our taste alone. However, to keep your container gardens growing happy and healthy you should give some consideration to the plant's needs when choosing a planter. Some things are common sense, like ensuring your planter has drainage holes. Here are some other things to think about: Plant Selection We often leave the choice of plants to the very end of creating a container garden. It's not crucial that you know ahead of time exactly what plant you plan to use in your container garden, but you do need to consider a couple of key facts when deciding on a planter. Lettuce Farming

Home-grown lettuce is far superior—in both taste and vitamin A content—to the store-bought alternative! Here’s how to plant, grow, and harvest lettuce in your garden. Lettuce is a cool-season crop that grows well in the spring and fall in most regions. Lettuce seedlings will even tolerate a light frost. Temperatures between 45°F and 65°F are ideal. Because lettuce grows quickly, the best approach is to plant a small amount at a time, staggering your plantings. P LANTING Before you plant your lettuce seeds, make sure the soil is prepared. It should be loose and drain well so it’s moist without staying soggy. To keep the soil fertile, feed it with organic matter about one week before you seed or transplant. Since the seed is so small, a well-tilled seedbed is essential. Large clods will reduce germination.   Read more about preparing soil for planting . Direct sowing is recommended as soon as the ground can be worked. Plant seeds ...
